Baptism

The sacrament of baptism ushers us into the divine life, cleanses us from sin, and initiates us as members of the Christian community. It is the foundation for the sacramental life.
At baptism, the presider prays over the water:
Father, look now with love upon your Church, and unseal for her the fountain of baptism. By the power of the Holy Spirit give to this water the grace of your Son, so that in the sacrament of baptism all those whom you have created in your likeness may be cleansed from sin and rise to a new birth of innocence by water and the Holy Spirit. (Christian Initiation of Adults, #222A)
Freed from Sin
Baptism frees us from the bondage of original and actual sin. Water is poured in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Today, the sacrament of baptism is often performed on infants, shortly after birth. Adult baptisms take place at the Easter Vigil through the restored Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Adults or children who have been baptized in a valid Christian church are not baptized again in the Catholic church. As we say in the Nicene Creed, “I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins…”
The Catechism
teaches:
"The fruit of Baptism, or baptismal grace, is a rich reality that includes forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins, birth into the new life by which man becomes an adoptive son of the Father, a member of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. By this very fact the person baptized is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ, and made a sharer in the priesthood of Christ" (CCC 1279).
Baptismal Symbols
- Water – The waters of baptism recall Jesus’ own baptism by John the Baptist in the river Jordan. Water is a symbol of cleansing and renewal as we begin a new life in Christ. We are washed clean of sin.
- Oil – At baptism we are anointed into the life of Christ as “priest, prophet and king.” A cross is traced on the candidate’s forehead as a reminder that we are inheritors of the Kingdom of God.
- Light – The baptismal candle is lit from the Paschal or Easter candle that stands in the church as a sign of Christ’s light in the world. At baptism, we receive the light of Christ and are called forth to share this light with the world.
- White garment – The white garment that is placed upon us at baptism is a symbol of Christ’s victory over death and his glorious resurrection. Likewise, the white garment or pall that is placed over the coffin at the time of death recalls our baptismal promises and reminds us that we are destined for eternal life.
While in ordinary circumstances, sacraments in the Catholic Church are administered validly by a member of the ordained clergy, in an emergency situation, the sacrament of baptism can be administered by anyone.
In case of necessity, any person can baptize provided that he have the intention of doing that which the Church does and provided that he pour water on the candidates head while saying: “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (CCC 1284).

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PARENTS
• Must take Baptism Preparation Classes
• Be registered parishioners of Immaculate Heart of Mary OR
• Live within the parish boundaries
Families not registered at Immaculate Heart of Mary are encouraged to baptize at the church within their boundaries unless permission from their church is granted to baptize here.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SPONSORS
“There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each.” CCL #873. Two persons of the same sex cannot be the sponsors (male/male or female/female).
• Must take Baptism Preparation Classes
• Must be at least 16 years old
• Must have received First Communion
• Must have received Confirmation
• If married, must be married by the Catholic Church

WHAT TO BRING TO REGISTRATION
Baptism Registrations take place in the Parish Office two months prior to the month of baptism. (Calendar on back)
Parish Office Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Closed 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
• ORIGINAL Birth Certificate. Photocopies not accepted.
• If Baptism Preparation Classes have already been taken, bring the original Proof of Baptismal Classes with Parish Seal. Photocopies not accepted.
• Copy of identification with legal name of the Sponsors as it is to appear on the Baptism Certificate
• $50 Registration Fee
BAPTISM PREPARATION CLASSES
• Available at Immaculate Heart of Mary the month prior to the baptism date. Parents and Sponsors are required to attend both pre-baptism classes. (calendar on back)
• Parents and Sponsors must bring their bible to the Baptism Preparation classes
• Parents and Sponsors are NOT to bring children to the Baptismal Classes
• Must be registered on class roster to attend classes
GENERAL INFORMATION
• There are no scheduled baptisms in during Advent or Lenten Seasons
• No private baptisms are permitted
• Baptism certificates will be issued to the parents after the baptism. Please see the baptism coordinator before you leave. If you do not pick up your certificate after the mass come by the office during normal business hours to pick it up. Certificates are not mailed.
• No chewing gum is allowed in the church
• Please be respectful and turn off all devices when entering the Church

El sacramento del bautismo nos introduce en la vida divina, nos limpia del pecado y nos inicia como miembros de la comunidad cristiana. Es el fundamento de la vida sacramental.
En el bautismo, el celebrante ora sobre el agua:
Padre, mira ahora con amor a tu Iglesia, y abre para ella la fuente del bautismo. Por el poder del Espíritu Santo da a esta agua la gracia de tu Hijo, para que en el sacramento del bautismo todos aquellos a quienes has creado a tu semejanza puedan ser limpiados del pecado y resucitar a un nuevo nacimiento de inocencia por el agua y el Espíritu Santo. (Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos, #222A)
Liberados del Pecado
El bautismo nos libera de la esclavitud del pecado original y actual. El agua es derramada en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Hoy en día, el sacramento del bautismo a menudo se realiza en los bebés, poco después del nacimiento. Los bautismos de adultos tienen lugar en la Vigilia Pascual a través del Rito restaurado de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos.Los adultos o niños que han sido bautizados en una iglesia cristiana válida no son bautizados de nuevo en la iglesia católica. Como decimos en el Credo de Nicea, "Confieso un bautismo para el perdón de los pecados..."
El Catecismo enseña:
"El fruto del Bautismo, o gracia bautismal, es una rica realidad que incluye el perdón del pecado original y de todos los pecados personales, el nacimiento a la nueva vida por la cual el hombre se convierte en un hijo adoptivo del Padre, un miembro de Cristo y un templo del Espíritu Santo. Por este mismo hecho, la persona bautizada es incorporada a la Iglesia, el Cuerpo de Cristo, y hecha partícipe del sacerdocio de Cristo" (CIC 1279).
Símbolos bautismales
- Agua – Las aguas del bautismo recuerdan el propio bautismo de Jesús por Juan el Bautista en el río Jordán. El agua es un símbolo de limpieza y renovación a medida que comenzamos una nueva vida en Cristo. Somos lavados del pecado.
- Aceite – En el bautismo somos ungidos en la vida de Cristo como "sacerdote, profeta y rey". Una cruz se traza en la frente del candidato como un recordatorio de que somos herederos del Reino de Dios.
- Luz – La vela bautismal se enciende de la vela pascual o de Pascua que se encuentra en la iglesia como un signo de la luz de Cristo en el mundo. En el bautismo, recibimos la luz de Cristo y somos llamados a compartir esta luz con el mundo.
- Vestimenta blanca – La vestimenta blanca que se coloca sobre nosotros en el bautismo es un símbolo de la victoria de Cristo sobre la muerte y su gloriosa resurrección. Del mismo modo, la prenda blanca o manto que se coloca sobre el ataúd en el momento de la muerte recuerda nuestras promesas bautismales y nos recuerda que estamos destinados a la vida eterna.
Mientras que en circunstancias ordinarias, los sacramentos en la Iglesia Católica son administrados válidamente por un miembro del clero ordenado, en una situación de emergencia, el sacramento del bautismo puede ser administrado por cualquier persona.
En caso de necesidad, cualquier persona puede bautizar siempre que tenga la intención de hacer lo que hace la Iglesia y siempre que vierta agua sobre la cabeza de los candidatos mientras dice: "Te bautizo en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo" (CIC 1284).

REQUISITOS PARA LOS PADRES
• Los Padres deben tomar Clases de Preparación Bautismal
• Los Padres deben ser miembros registrados de Inmaculado Corazón
de María O vivir dentro de los límites de la parroquia.
Se anima a las familias que no están registradas en Inmaculado Corazón de María a que bauticen en la iglesia dentro de sus límites a menos de que se le otorgue permiso de su parroquia para bautizar aquí.
REQUISITOS PARA LOS PADRINOS
“Téngase un solo padrino o una sola madrina, o uno y una.” CDC #873 No se permite dos personas del mismo sexo para padrino/madrina (hombre/hombre o mujer/mujer).
• Deben tomar Clases de Preparación Bautismal.
• Tener al menos 16 años de edad
• Haber recibido el sacramento de la Primera Comunión
• Haber recibido el sacramento de la Confirmación
• Si es casado, debe ser por la Iglesia Católica

QUE DEBE TRAER A LA INSCRIPCIÓN
Las inscripciones de bautismo se llevan a cabo en la Oficina Parroquial dos (2) meses antes del mes del bautismo (Calendario atrás). Horario de Oficina: Lunes-Viernes, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Cerrado 12 – 1:00 p.m.)
• Acta de Nacimiento ORIGINAL. No se aceptan copias.
• Si los padres y/o padrinos ya han tomado las Clases de Preparación Bautismal, favor traer el comprobante original con el sello parroquial. No se aceptan copias.
• Copia de identificación con nombre legal de los padrinos como debe aparecer en el Certificado de Bautismo
• Cuota de Inscripción de $50.
CLASES DE PREPARACIÓN BAUTISMAL
• Disponibles en Inmaculado Corazón de María el mes anterior al bautismo. Padres y Padrinos deben asistir a las dos Clases de Preparación Bautismal (Ver calendario atrás)
• Padres y Padrinos traigan sus biblias a las Clases de Preparación Bautismal.
• Padres y Padrinos NO deben traer niños a las Clases de Preparación Bautismal
• Deben estar inscritos en las clases para asistir a ellas.
INFORMACIÓN GENERAL
• No hay bautismos durante Adviento y Cuaresma.
• No se permiten bautismos privados.
• Se entrega el certificado de bautismo después del bautismo. Pase con la coordinadora después de la misa. Si no recoge su certificado después de la misa pase a la Oficina Parroquial durante el horario de oficina para recogerlo. Los certificados no se envían por correo.
• No se permite masticar chicle dentro de la iglesia.
• Favor de ser respetuoso y apagar todo aparato electrónico antes de entrar a la Iglesia.
